Remembering Michael Jackson

Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.

William Shakespeare

Yesterday, today and tomorrow are days of mourning for the world. Michael Jackson, the world-reknown King of Pop, died yesterday at approximately 2:26 pm in the UCLA Medical Centre due to Cardiac Arrest. According to the Jackson’s lawyer, “for the last many months, and almost more than a year, this family has been talking about the use of medications by Michael and warning he was going to wake up dead…” This quote provided by CTV News which was also quoted by MSN.com, is indeed tragic. Jackson’s heart has failed him but above all, society has failed to look back at his greatness before his death

I remember being a kid who’d be bored enough to run through her parent’s CD and VCD collections. There, I’d find a huge array of Michael Jackson collection. I’ll sit there infront of our tube TV, watching Thriller, which at that time, did really scare the cr*AP out of me. I remember enjoying the medley of “Do You Remember the Time” and how it captured my childhood yearning for Ancient Egypt. I remember watching “Billy Jean” and having the song stuck in my head for days. I remember being touched by “Heal the World” and  made me want to be a philantrophist, a social activist for people in need…. I remember being a lonely and delusioned kid who felt her world crumbling and had no one to talk to at home… and  somehow, I managed to pull through because in those moments of disillusionment and alienation, I learned to find  haven from music through his music…

Rest in Paradise
Michael Jackson
August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009

Before yesterday, the only media covering Michael Jackson was in a form of parody. The world has seen him as a psychotic pop star, physically and mentally disfigured. Today, even hypocrites mourn. Death is an irreversible phenomenon. Other sees it as a demise and there are those who are given a rebirth through it. Through his death, the greatness of Michael Jackson is once again recaptured. His death has given him the rebirth he has sought after for years. He lived a life which no one of us dared to dream. He lived and his music continues to live. Thus, when we all wake up tomorrow, he will be remembered as a kind of greatness who will continue to live on amidst all social imperfection and moral degradation, society has placed upon him.

That is all.

Adieu.
