Philippine National Day in Toronto and My Lack of Attending Initiative

Philippine National Day is celebrated here in Toronto to commemorate the Independence Day achieved by the Filipino people over a hundred years ago. It is held at Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square, and by being there, you can actually experience a nostalgia for the old country… Well, somewhat.
Personally, it’s not really my cup of tea to attend it. Most of the guys whom I actually know, only go there to “score” on Filipino girls. I see it as a gathering for 1st-generation-Filipino-teenager-wannabe-gangsters-immigrants to flaunt their supposed “coolness” to people who don’t actually give a damn. You may perhaps be asking why I have this so much contempt on these type of people. So let me tell you the story of my experience there a week ago…

True Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

I just thought of sharing this video to you all. I was randomly fidgeting with my MSN Messenger when this link popped out of the advertisment page. It was really agonizing to watch how this beautiful lady ironically ruined her face by inducing cooking oil into her skin, in hopes of achieving a softer skin. It made me think of how many people out there, not only women, have succumbed to the promise of “beauty” through cosmetic enhancement procedures such as steriod and botox injections.
Love Poetry Entry #2: The Blast from the Past

Cherry Blossoms are not common here in Toronto. There are very few segregated places which have them. Personally, I’ve never been to one. I found out, through google of course, that High Park has them. I want to see them because I’ve never seen Cherry Blossoms at full bloom before. There are a few Cherry Blossom trees planted near the Humanities Building in my campus but they are still quite young and haven’t reached their maturity yet.

Miss Manila Pageant in Toronto: a Money-Wasting Eye Bleeder for the Deranged
Tuesday, June 2, 2009 It would be an endless task to trace the variety of meannesses, cares, and sorrows, into which women are plunged by the prevailing opinion that they were created rather to feel than reason, and that all the power they obtain, must be obtained by their charms and weakness.
~Mary Wollstoncraft-Godwin, A Vindication of the Rights of Women

I logged in to my facebook account half an hour ago and was horrified by the flood of Miss Manila Pageant pics on my newsfeed. This Miss Manila Pageant is held every year in Toronto and sadly, it’s one of those beauty contest that I regard as a waste of time. When I got invited to see the event last year, I did not know what to expect. In fact, I turned my closet inside-out just to find something to wear. I did not want to look overly dressed nor did I want to look like garbage, so I settled for one of my vintage dresses.
